Embarrassing software – Tesla Model 3 mistook a full moon for a traffic light

You could almost take it for one of Elon Musk’s jokes, but the Tesla boss probably won’t find it really funny: A Model 3 mistook the moon in the sky for a traffic light – and reacted to it. The owner of the car filmed all of this on his cell phone.

First of all: the Tesla saw a yellow traffic light in the moon, not a red one. Otherwise he might have slammed on the brakes. The actual reaction was more harmless, but still embarrassing: on the stylized road on the display, the driver quickly comes across a traffic light.

The man with a smartphone and behaviorally original Tesla is called Jordan Nelson and was driving on a dead straight highway at dusk towards the full moon. The cruise control was set to 65 miles (just under 105 km / h).

The central display of the electric car shows a yellow traffic light that is rapidly approaching. In addition, the request to stop, even the speed is automatically reduced slightly. And it happens over and over again, so often that Nelson has time to pull out his cell phone and record the drama. The video clearly shows: No sign of a traffic light.

Nelson posted the clip on Twitter with the comment, “Hey, Elon Musk, you might have better let your team look into the moon, who are fooling the autopilot system. The car thinks the Mon is a yellow light and wants to slow down all the time ”.

Over a million Twitter users have already seen the video, some of whom have also left comments. Like “Braked a few hundred thousand miles too early.

The sun also triggered the error
Another user tweeted a clip from his Tesla: For him, the car reacted to the rising sun.

The fact is: before cars can really drive autonomously, such errors must be ruled out.
