The summer is set to be hot in the emergency room due to staff shortages, bed closures and overcrowded waiting rooms. Hospital emergency departments are preparing for yet another tense summer.

If July is already tense, August will be even worse. “For reasons of resource management and to be able to give staff time off, we close beds. However, we do not have fewer patients in August,” says Marc Noizet, president of Samu-Urgences de France. It is the emergency services of large cities that suffer the most between the influx of tourists and doctors who go on vacation. As a result, the emergency rooms are saturated.

Before going to the emergency room, you must call the 15 center

In such times, patients have a role to play: systematically call 15 before going to the hospital. “There are a certain number of services now that have medical access regulation. If you cannot find a doctor who meets your needs, before going to the emergency room, you must call the 15 center so that the SAMU can direct you to the right path, whether it is the emergency room or scheduled care centers. In any case, we will not leave a patient without treating them,” specifies the president of Samu-Urgences de France.

Last year, more than 40% of emergency services used this system, particularly at night, and in certain departments, such as Brittany and Manche, the reflex of calling 15 has become obligatory.
