Emergency landing with 30 injured, severe turbulence shakes Boeing flight

An Air Europa flight from Madrid to Montevideo experienced severe turbulence. Around 30 people were injured and the plane had to make an emergency landing in Brazil.

In March 2023, several people were injured, some seriously, by sudden turbulence on two Condor and Lufthansa flights. And almost six weeks ago, turbulence left 30 people injured and one dead on Singapore Airlines flight SQ321. The Boeing 777-300ER suddenly sank 54 meters.

Boeing makes emergency landing with several injured

Now an Air Europa flight has been hit, according to Brazilian media reports. Flight UX45 took off from Madrid at 11:55 p.m. on June 30th and was supposed to land in Montevideo just under 13 hours later. Instead of landing in Uruguay’s capital, the Boeing 787-9 with the registration EC-MTI had to make an unscheduled landing in Natal, Brazil.

Ceiling panels on board destroyed

After around six hours in the air, the Dreamliner was hit by severe turbulence near the equator. Of the 325 passengers, 30 were injured. Some were so badly that a landing in Natal was necessary.

According to the emergency medical service in Natal, more than ten people had to be treated in hospital with cervical fractures, facial injuries and bruises. Air Europa said in a statement that the flight was diverted to Natal due to “the nature of the turbulence and for safety reasons.”
