Emma Stone, the art of the replica

In Cannes, the beauty salons live up to their name. Take a look at the packages offered: “Angelina Jolie” (microneedling + manicure + blow-dry, 180 euros), “Charlize Theron” (teeth whitening + make-up + blow-dry, 210 euros)… Yet with a reputation comparable to these actresses, Emma Stone does not have, to this day, any offering to his glory. This is because the American actress resists too clear classifications. From this floating identity, the Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos made the subject of their fourth collaboration, Kinds of Kindness, movie presented in competition on the Croisette.

Like the rest of the cast, Emma Stone plays three characters, neither quite the same nor completely different each time. Her playing partners, inevitably, get a little lost: in one of the three segments of the film, a cop, played by Jesse Plemons, imagines that she has been replaced by a double.

The scene, remarkable for its disturbing strangeness, is replayed for laughs by the two actors, in the palace where we meet them. “Are you the real Emma?” Who knows… “mutters Jesse Plemons, in his inimitably cavernous voice. “If you say that, it’s because you’re not Jesse, but his avatar!” »Stone counters, stinging as hell. Their cans of Red Bull let out a synchronous “pschitt”. The redhead is wearing a t-shirt dyed by his children; the redhead wears a beige Vuitton dress and black stilettos, one trying to stabilize, the other trying to stabilize her figure.

For some time now, Hollywood has been orchestrating the promotion of its stars in pairs, rather than solo. In the case of Kinds of Kindness – whose working title has long been And (“and”) – this fad turns out to be less painful than usual. Especially since Stone and Plemons hardly have to overplay their complicity: born the same year – in 1988 – they grew up on similar soil, she in a chic and arty suburb of Phoenix (Arizona), he in Dallas ( Texas).

Revealed by the series breaking Bad And Friday Night Lights, pampered by the Hollywood elite (Spielberg, Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, etc.), Jesse Plemons had not, until then, worked with a European filmmaker. Emma Stone was happy to play middleman. “Yorgos’ cinema is unlike any other, you have to accept not having all the answers… At first, it’s scary, but it quickly becomes liberating. Emma guided and reassured me”confides Plemons.

Emma Stone, Yorgos Lanthimos’ favorite

From The Favorite (2016), Stone became the favorite actress, precisely, of the Hellene alien. A collaboration that is successful for her: she landed this year, for the second time after La La Land in 2017, the Oscar for best actress for her extraordinary role in the Greek director’s previous film, Poor Creatures.
