The Head of State does not rule out going to Moscow or kyiv to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But the conditions are “not met” to make these trips “in the coming days”.
Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that he “did not rule out” going to Moscow or kyiv about the Russian invasion of Ukraine but judged that the “conditions were not met” to make these trips “in the next days”. “I do not exclude anything and any political initiative, I will do it when I consider that there can be a useful and tangible result”, declared the French president on the sidelines of a meeting with Ukrainian refugees in Maine-et -Loire. “But today the conditions are not met” to allow “to make such a trip something that is likely to change the situation”, added the head of state.
He was questioned about the possibility of him traveling to one or the other of the two countries, while the Polish, Czech and Slovenian Prime Ministers traveled to kyiv on Tuesday.
“I do not exclude any displacement”
“I will for the moment continue to work with our method, (…) continue this work of discussions with each other, continue intense work in Europe, and we will do it with the prospect of the European Council next week. And then also expand our diplomatic initiatives” with the United States, China, to “try to produce this negotiated, useful diplomatic solution, first a ceasefire and a settlement of the conflict,” he said.
“I therefore do not exclude any travel but it is not planned in the next few hours or the next few days”, he continued.
The fourth round of talks between Ukraine and Russia resumed on Tuesday after a break the day before, a senior Ukrainian official said, insisting on the ceasefire demanded by kyiv.
