PARIS (Reuters) – Emmanuel Macron said he was open, on Wednesday on France 2, to postponing the legal retirement age to 64 instead of 65, “if we lengthen the quarters”.
“But everyone has to get involved,” he added, referring to the future consultation with the social partners. The President of the Republic, on the other hand, excluded a scenario at 63 years old.
After presenting a graph showing that the number of hours worked by the French throughout their lives is lower than that of their neighbours, Emmanuel Macron assured that no “serious” expert is saying today that pensions in France are financed in the medium term.
Without pension reform, he justified, “either you increase your pension contributions for workers, which means that in 2027, on average per worker, you will have to pay 400 euros more per year in pension contributions – it’s less purchasing power.”, or we lower pensions, which is “unbearable for our retirees”.
