(Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron announced overnight from Friday to Saturday that he had had a “frank and sincere” discussion with Elon Musk.

The French president said in a tweet that Twitter had to comply with European regulations, particularly with regard to the conditions of use, the moderation of content and the protection of freedom of expression.

Emmanuel Macron had criticized the new owner of Twitter on Thursday after his decision to reduce the moderation of content on the social network.

The head of state also announced that Elon Musk had confirmed Twitter’s participation in the “Christchurch call”, an initiative launched in 2019 to strengthen the fight against terrorist propaganda and violent extremism on the internet.

“There is no place for terrorist and violent extremist content anywhere,” Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter.

The French president said he had discussed with the boss of Tesla on future green industrial projects, “in particular on the manufacture of electric vehicles and batteries” without however providing details.

“We will work with Twitter to improve the protection of children online”, also announced the head of state.
