After hours of debate, the two men finally agreed. While all French people are gradually finding their freedom despite very strict deconfinement rules, Emmanuel Macron looked at another national priority: municipal elections interrupted after the first round last March. A stormy subject who has had the gift of pitting a large number of French mayors. For this, the President of the Republic appealed to his Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe, as well as several members of the majority. Together, despite the discrepancies that may reign between the two men, Edouard Philippe and Emmanuel Macron finally agreed on a date that would allow them to complete the file.

"He and Philippe almost finished ahead of us"

As explained by our colleagues from Parisian, Emmanuel Macron wanted to mix business with pleasure by inviting his guests "on the terrace of the presidential palace with a view of the garden", Tuesday, May 19, 2020. Once the greetings were made, the President of the Republic issued his verdict, in line with the request of the mayors: "He told us that the date of June 28 was unanimous among them, and that it would therefore be very difficult not to choose this option ", expressed one of the representatives present around the table, before adding: "He and Philippe almost finished ahead of us for this date, stating that it would of course be conditioned on the health status of the country at that time."

Among the political figures invited to the famous Elysée dinner were also present Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of Action and Public Accounts and Richard Ferrand, the President of the National Assembly. The latter also gave his approval, although very opposed to this second round in June: "I will support the decision", can we read in the Parisian. Indeed, Richard Ferrand had deplored to see some mayors vying to take advantage of the coronavirus crisis to campaign undercover : "Some outgoing mayors have used the means of this health crisis to put on stage, in particular by distributing masks, and therefore continue to campaign without saying so. " A dinner is therefore held Wednesday May 20, 2020 to formalize the date of the second round, a "difficult decision" according to Edouard Philippe.
