During his interview granted on the occasion of July 14, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, returned to international news, still marked by the war in Ukraine. A conflict which has highlighted certain shortcomings in the tricolor army which must be replenished.

The French army must be muscled. This was indicated by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, during his interview with TF1 and France 2 on the occasion of the national holiday, this Thursday, July 14. The war in Ukraine has revealed flaws, or at least shortcomings in the French defense apparatus.

If the armies today are well calibrated to hunt down the jihadists of the Malian desert, they are not sized to fight against an army which, on paper, would be of an equivalent level.

A precise diagnosis of needs and shortages

“With this new context, we must absolutely reinvest in all our stocks and our capacities, continue to hire, train and continue to have an even stronger army. Because those who told us, some time ago, ‘ high-intensity war will not come back’ were wrong,” said the head of state.

Emmanuel Macron has commissioned the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces to make a precise diagnosis of the needs and shortcomings of his troops. A return is expected next fall. The military budget is sanctuarized and will not decrease. On the contrary, it will increase by 3 billion euros in 2023. In addition, a new military programming law 2024-2030 will be written. It will be debated and submitted to Parliament early next year.
