The opening of additional places in the Nursing Training Institutes (IFSI) will continue, announced Emmanuel Macron during his greetings to nursing staff, Friday January 6, with the objective of “strengthening teams at the bedside of patients”.
In “puffing out the torso”, the Head of State was pleased to have already enabled a 20% increase in the number of students in three years. But the complacency ends there: “30% of students stop during training and about 10-15% fail at the end. » Sover 100 students trained, “We actually have 55 arriving on the field”, deplored the President of the Republic, who calls, by the summer, to “review the organization and operation” nursing studies.
On the higher education assignment platform Parcoursup, the success of the IFSI has not been denied: this is the wish most often expressed by candidates for four years. But, nuanced Mr. Macron again, “Parcoursup is not optimal” because he “does not allow today to properly measure motivation” candidates.
The other lever outlined by the Head of State consists, downstream, in “taking responsibility for the end of studies” to prevent new graduates from “Leave immediately as an interim or replacement”. He pleads for a kind of contract of engagement “of X years” in a post.
Lack of recognition
Within the IFSI, these declarations astonished trainers and students. The president of the National Association of Directors of Paramedical Schools, Florence Girard, does not see ” nothing new ” and wonders about the 30% stoppage of studies put forward by the Head of State. “It is not because a student enters a T year that he will leave the institute three years later”, she indicates, recalling that, since 2007, it is authorized to interrupt and then resume one’s course, after a maximum duration of three years. “Many are coming back”, she affirms, emphasizing that the trained public comes “of middle or even low social categories, without always having optimal conditions for following studies”.
Further increasing the number of IFSIs seems impossible to Manon Morel, president of the National Federation of Nursing Students. “Our structures are not expandable, students are sometimes sitting on the ground”, she relates. Not to mention the other limit, which relates to internship offers. “Some are currently sent to departments where a single professional manages four or five trainees. »
