In the talent show “Stadt Land Talent”, an assistant at a law firm brings tears to Jonny Fischer’s eyes.

In March, Luca Hänni, Stefanie Heinzmann and Jonny Fischer are looking for exceptional show talents in Switzerland as “Talent Scouts”. Some are at the beginning of their careers, others want to grab what might be their last chance.

dream of an opera career

For example Michael Waeckerlin. The 46-year-old from Zurich works as an assistant in a law firm. Besides, he sings. At the age of thirty he discovered his passion for classical music and wanted to be an opera singer. He took singing lessons and had his voice trained at La Scala in Milan. But the dream of an opera career did not come true.

At my age there will no longer be a big breakthrough.

For 14 years he has been touring around restaurants and bars as “The Human Jukebox”, appearing at neighborhood festivals and company celebrations. His concept: You choose a song from your list, throw a coin into the piggy bank and he sings live to a playback. His repertoire includes 250 songs from pop to metal to classical.

Legend:

Michael Wäckerlin aka «The Human Jukebox» on the show stage.

As a human jukebox, Wäckerlin would also like to impress Luca Hänni, Stefanie Heinzmann and Jonny Fischer. In a black suit, with a bow tie and purple Poschettli, he enters the stage of “Le Théâtre” in Emmen. The singer brought his homemade jukebox. A kind of rolling cardboard bin with colorful lettering and flashing lights.

Rapper with Poschettli

“What’s happening now? Does the part fly away, does it roll away?” Luca Hänni teases. And Jonny Fischer chooses “Die Biene Maja” as the first song. The singer is not irritated. Hits every note, wagging imaginary wings. And then raps the 1990 hit “Ice, Ice, Baby”. A rapper with Poschettli.

Stefanie Heinzmann chooses the last song. She chooses “Rise Like a Phoenix”, Conchita Wurst’s ESC winning song. And what happens then is one of those moments that many casting shows love for: an ordinary person shows their extraordinary talent at the decisive moment. Wäckerlin’s warm tenor fills the room with force. Goosebumps spread. Thunderous applause – and an enthusiastic jury.

At first I thought you were doing comedy. And then you blast us away. I had tears in my eyes – still.

Michael Wäckerlin is in the final of “Stadt Land Talent” on March 25th. The other finalists of the first edition are Alicia Lehmann (dance), Lorenzo Manetti & Gionata Pieracci (variety) and Eyakeno Ekpo (music).
