Employees wanted: – Tourism professionals should train more apprentices

“For me, working in tourism is the best thing in the world,” said tourism spokesman Josef Petritsch on Wednesday at the opening press conference of the new managing director of Kärnten Werbung. But in view of the massive shortage of employees in the industry, Petritsch appeals to the approximately 5,500 Carinthian tourism companies that they should train more apprentices: “Otherwise it won’t work anymore!” Because tourism now needs more employees than ever to offer Carinthian holidaymakers the to offer the same performance.

Because according to Chamber of Commerce spokesman Josef Petritsch, the reasons for the lack of employees are not the bad working atmosphere and poor pay: “On the contrary”, says Petritsch: “Carinthia’s tourism currently employs the highest number of employees over the entire year!” those responsible for tourism simply need more people to be able to offer holidaymakers the same service. “Colleagues in the tourism companies are very flexible towards the employees, they offer new working time models of four to six days with good pay.” Nevertheless, there is a lack of specialists, but also unskilled workers: “The third-country contingent must be opened up again,” says Petritsch, That means that more people from non-EU countries are allowed to work with us. Nevertheless, politicians and the Chamber of Commerce are aware that this cannot be the only solution, more young people must be trained in tourism in the future. Petritsch: “We have already launched a number of projects, we actively go to schools where we address up to 7,000 students over the year and try to get them excited about tourism.” Together with the Chamber of Labor, a separate award is to be created, an award for excellent training companies. But currently only 240 of the 5,500 tourism companies in Carinthia are training apprentices. Tourism also wants to organize an apprenticeship exchange where young people can come into direct contact with companies. Tourism spokesman and hotelier Petritsch sets a good example and has already taken on an apprentice.
