Employer boss warns of crisis
Association demands right to care place

There is a lot of discussion about care for the elderly, but little happens. The President of the Nursing Employers’ Association therefore demands a legal entitlement to a home in Germany. If countermeasures are not taken, there are dramatic consequences.

The employers’ association for care calls for the introduction of a legal entitlement to a care place in Germany. “A legal entitlement to a place in a nursing home would increase the political pressure to tackle the enormous challenges in geriatric care courageously instead of ignoring and moderating them, as is happening at the moment,” said association president Thomas Greiner of the “Rheinische Post”.

Greiner named the right to a day-care center as a role model. This guarantees that municipalities ensure the nationwide supply of daycare places despite the shortage of skilled workers. “And it forces politicians to take action when there is a risk of a supply crisis,” Greiner continued. This is also necessary for elderly care.

He described the situation in geriatric care as serious. The costs have exploded, the staff situation is tense, “and numerous nursing homes are facing bankruptcy,” said Greiner. In addition, beds remained empty “because they cannot be occupied due to the lack of staff and at the same time rigid personnel specifications”. Those who suffer are “those in need of care and their relatives who are desperately looking for a place in a home”.
