Encanto: Why isn’t Bruno’s song nominated for an Oscar?

Success of the year, Encanto’s flagship title, “Ne Parlons pas de Bruno”, was not nominated for the Oscar for Best Song. We explain why.

The Oscar nominations fell last Tuesday and contrary to what the public expected, the title Let’s not talk about Bruno taken from the film Encanto, the fantastic Madrigal family is not nominated in the category Best song of the year.

The heady song written by Lin-Manuel Miranda recently ranked at the top of the prestigious Billboard Hot 100, the ranking of the best-selling singles in the United States, thus surpassing the famous Let It Go from Frozen and This blue dream of Aladdin from Disney Studios.

However, it is Dos Oruguitas (also composed by Miranda) which represents the feature film by Byron Howard, Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith at the Oscars.

For the record, the other titles competing in this category are Down to Joy by Van Morrison for Belfast, Somehow You Do for Four Good Days, be alive taken from The Williams Method and No Time To Die by Billie Eilish for Dying Can Wait.

A surprise success

Disney had in fact not foreseen the success of the song devoted to Mirabel’s uncle and had therefore proposed another title to the Academy. Variety reports that the studios had until November 1 to submit the songs. However, Encanto was released in the United States at the end of the month and no one had anticipated the success of Let’s not talk about Bruno.

A surprise success which is explained in particular by the resumption of the title on the TikTok application. The song was used in over 496,000 videos and quickly went viral. With already more than 29 million streams and 8,000 downloads, Let’s not talk about Bruno is one of the most listened to songs on Spotify in the world.

A public success which will therefore not be rewarded with a statuette, but the nomination of the soundtrack composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Germaine Franco in the category Best original music could make up for things.
