Record goalscorer Terodde is “ending now”

Nobody has scored as many goals in the 2nd Bundesliga as Simon Terodde. But the Schalke 04 striker can no longer build on his record as he ends his career after this season. A step that he was “always afraid” of before.

Second division record scorer Simon Terodde is ending his career after this season. “After 16 years in professional football, it’s over now!” said the 36-year-old via Instagram. He had previously informed his teammates at FC Schalke 04 about the decision. In 310 games in the 2nd Bundesliga, the center forward scored 177 goals and was top scorer four times. Terodde leads the ranking of second division goalscorers ahead of Dieter Schatzschneider (153 goals).

Terodde, who was born in Bocholt, began his career at MSV Duisburg. Before his time at Schalke, he also played for Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1. FC Köln, 1. FC Union Berlin, VfL Bochum, VfB Stuttgart and Hamburger SV. He has played 27 games for Schalke so far this season and scored five times. On Tuesday, Schalke secured relegation with a 4-0 (2-0) win at VfL Osnabrück.

Terodde has been playing for S04 since the 2021/22 season and led the club back to the Bundesliga with 30 goals this season. In the following season he was unable to avoid relegation; in the Bundesliga, Terodde scored 15 goals in 90 games.

At the end of his career, Terodde wrote: “For the last few years I’ve always been afraid of this day, I’ll be completely honest.” He was able to turn his hobby into a career and loved playing in front of sold-out crowds. “The way the ball hits the goal, seeing the net squirming, the ecstasy in the corners, these are all things that I will miss incredibly.”
