The President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, said on Tuesday that she hoped that the text on the end of life would be “re-examined before the end of the year in the Assembly”, while the examination of the bill had been interrupted just before the vote a few days before the dissolution.
“This is a text that is expected by the French and so I hope that it will be re-examined in the National Assembly before the end of the year. We are ready, the text is ready and so we have to go for it,” Braun-Pivet declared on BFMTV. MP Olivier Falorni (related to Modem), who chaired the parliamentary debates on the bill, has just submitted a proposal that largely takes up the content of the interrupted project, signed by 166 MPs. This law was to legalize assisted suicide and, in certain specific cases, euthanasia, by bringing important conditions to it, while refusing to use these terms, preferring to speak of “active aid in dying”.
But Michel Barnier’s government has many opponents to this text, which had already taken more than a year to hatch, first and foremost the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau, from the conservative right. Macronist ministers such as Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet (Labour) have also expressed their opposition, although the evolution of the law on the subject has long been a promise of Emmanuel Macron.
Other members of the government are in favour, however, such as Health Minister Geneviève Darieussecq, for whom parliamentarians “must finish the job”. Michel Barnier has so far given little indication in this regard.
