What position will MPs take on the subject of end of life? This is a question that divides the National Rally party. After its adoption in committee last week, the end-of-life bill arrives in the National Assembly next Monday. Marine Le Pen’s party is struggling to find a united position.
No party instructions
Officially, the deputies of the National Rally have not received any voting instructions. But in fact, a majority supports Marine Le Pen’s position, that is to say opposition to euthanasia or assisted suicide. The president of the RN group considers the text biased and accuses the government of knowingly forgetting the strengthening of palliative care to focus solely on the end of life.
An argument shared with certain Republican colleagues. And despite this unity displayed this Monday, next week, several RN deputies are likely to vote according to their personal convictions and thus diverge from Marine Le Pen. This was the case during the vote to include abortion in the Constitution. That day, the RN group, accustomed to unison votes, ended up totally divided. Societal issues therefore seem to be the Achilles heel of the National Rally. A loophole that the government intends to press just before the European elections.
