The decree which formalizes the removal of the green auto insurance sticker will be published in the coming hours for application from April 1, 2024. The government highlights the simplification of the administrative life of the French as well as the reliability of the Vehicle File insurers (FVA) which replaces it. Be careful though, car insurance remains compulsory in France, only the method of control changes.
After the time for announcements, now comes the time to modify the regulatory framework. From April 1, each car will no longer have to carry a green sticker on its windshield and each car insurer will no longer be forced to produce their certificate in the event of a roadside inspection.
The decree implementing this change will be published in the coming hours, Bercy said on Thursday. A decision that will help simplify the lives of motorists, congratulates France Assureurs. Professionals are also delighted that this decision is not accompanied by a new call for price moderation.

72 hours maximum to update the file
In terms of form, everything will now be recorded by insurance companies in a file called the Insured Vehicle File (FVA), created in 2016 and shared since 2019 with the police and the gendarmerie. When signing a new contract, insurers will have a maximum period of 72 hours to update the filespecifies Bruno Le Maire’s office.
The FVA lists the vehicle registration, the name of the insurer and the insurance contract number and its validity period. The file has become more reliable than checking paper stickers. It far exceeds the 99% reliability rate, welcomes Bercy, who specifies that the police will be equipped to be able to easily consult it.
Insurance companies will also have to send a memo to their client with all the guarantees subscribed. This summary, the details of which will be specified in the upcoming decree, will only be sent once over the duration of the contract and not, said, every year. Car insurance remains compulsory
Beyond the facility granted to policyholders and the end of the fine of 35 euros for non-presentation of the green sticker, the interministerial road safety delegation insists on the fact that car insurance – at least civil liability – remains compulsory in France.
