The Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus has officially been released from the list of supported devices by Samsung. The device will no longer be able to count on the deployment of Android security updates… pushing it down the path of software obsolescence.
Launched in 2018, the Galaxy S9 (and S9 Plus) bows out in software. After just four years of support, the former Samsung flagship will no longer be updated by its manufacturer. This is reported today by Android Authority, which informs us that Samsung has removed the device from its list of devices eligible for the latest Android security patches. A logical continuation for the Galaxy S9 (and S9 Plus), which had already been demoted to the rank of products limited to quarterly updates: the last step before the end of support.
Long story short, the March security update, which rolled out just under a month ago, was the latest to make its way to the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.
Four years of updates… and it wasn’t even planned!
Very short from an iOS user’s point of view (the iPhone 6S, launched in 2015, are still eligible for the latest versions of the system), this update time is commendable for an Android smartphone. Especially since the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus were not originally intended to be supported for 4 years by Samsung.
As Android Authority recalls, the device was not on the list of products eligible for the Korean giant’s new extended update program, unlike its replacement the Galaxy S10. By force of circumstance, the Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus has nevertheless benefited from regular updates during these four years, without however being able to take advantage of the latest Android features: the device is officially limited to Android 10.
Remember that it is possible to upgrade your Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus (or even a Note 9) to Android 12. On the other hand, you have to cheat a little and unlock the device to flash Noble ROM on it. An interesting solution that allows the most resourceful to extend the life of the machine.
Note at the same time that Samsung has downgraded its Galaxy S10 at the same time to quarterly security updates only. Logically, the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e are therefore entering their last year of support.
