Endurance runner Wiko View5 Plus: This is a strong 200 euro smartphone

With the View5 Plus, Wiko offers a very interesting entry-level smartphone that offers a huge battery and a 48-megapixel camera for 200 euros. ntv.de has tried out how the device performs in everyday life.

If you didn't want to spend more than 200 euros on a smartphone, you either had to buy older mid-range devices or accept hardware that was just about bearable. But those times are over, you can now find good smartphones in this price range too. A specialist for entry-level devices is the French company Wiko, which presented the View5 Plus at the Mini-IFA in Berlin. ntv.de has tried it out and is particularly impressed by the endurance and the more than acceptable camera equipment of the new "cheap flagship".

Weaker display, strong battery

First of all, the Wiko View5 Plus does not show its low price. It looks good and works well. You can only see from the visible gaps between the back and the frame that it is not a more expensive device.

On the right side, the device has an additional button for the Google Assistant.

The 6.55-inch IPS display is a clearer indication of an entry-level smartphone. With HD resolution, it only offers a pixel density of 268 ppi and looks significantly more matt than the AMOLED screens of the higher classes. In addition, the display has wider bezels than the panels of the top devices. But it's not a pain for the eyes, and Wiko gets a bonus point for the idea of placing the battery indicator as a ring around the small hole for the front camera.

The screen looks a lot livelier when you increase the brightness. You can allow yourself that, because the smartphone has a battery with an enormous 5000 mAh capacity. Wiko states that this is enough for 3.5 days of use. This is a bit exaggerated, but the View5 Plus can easily last two days as long as you are not an extensive gamer.

Sufficient performance, good camera

In daylight, the main camera delivers photos with realistic colors, good contrasts and lots of details.

The 200 euro smartphone can also be used to play games, as the performance is sufficient. Games like "Alto's Odyssey" run smoothly, if necessary you can use the game mode to free up resources. Only more complex 3D games should be avoided, as the Mediatek processor and 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM reach their limits.

You don't reach the limit so quickly with storage space, which is a proud 128 GB. If necessary, you can expand it with microSD cards, but then you have to do without the second SIM card.

The quadruple camera on the back is also remarkable for a smartphone in this price range. The main camera takes very attractive photos with 48 megapixels and the images do not rustle as quickly even in weaker light. The device even has a night mode, which achieves very reasonable results.

The 8-megapixel super wide-angle camera also produces decent pictures in daylight, and the results of the macro snapshots are okay, although it only has a resolution of two megapixels. The fourth camera provides depth information for an artificial bokeh in portraits. As long as you don't exaggerate the blurring, the effect is quite respectable.

There is also a plus point for the software, which is almost an unchanged Google Android 10. Only the intrusive Wiko services are annoying with advertising and app recommendations. But once you've endured it, you can turn it off. And pre-installed apps like Wiko Health can be uninstalled if you don't want them.

Cheap is even cheaper

All in all, the Wiko View5 Plus is a successful entry-level smartphone that is far more enjoyable than the low price suggests. The camera equipment is pretty good and the endurance is impressive. The display is the biggest weak point, but this is hardly noticeable without a direct comparison with better screens. If you want to spend even less money, you can use the simple Wiko View5 for 170 euros. Then there is only 64 GB of flash memory and 3 GB of RAM.
