Enel: stop using coal in Chile

(CercleFinance.com) – The Chilean company of the Enel group, Enel Chile, has disconnected and stopped the operation of Unit II of its Bocamina coal-fired power plant, located in the municipality of Coronel.

With this milestone, which follows the closure of Tarapacà in 2019 and Unit I of Bocamina in 2021, Enel becomes the first electricity company in the country to stop using coal for its production operations.

“The shutdown of our last coal-fired generation unit in operation in Chile underscores the Enel Group’s commitment to decarbonizing its energy systems,” said Salvatore Bernabei, Managing Director of Enel Green Power.

This closure includes relocation options for plant employees, the implementation of a wide range of initiatives for the social, economic and entrepreneurial development of the community, as well as a re-vegetation project aimed at transforming the 10 hectare area of the mill ash dump in native forest.
