The constant rise in energy prices is already pushing us to review some of our habits. And it turns out that gamers can put in the effort thanks to a setting on their favorite home console.

The latest Xboxes are particularly greedy in watts even once “off”.

A practical mode but…

It has probably escaped no one, energy prices are likely to soar in the months to come. And if there is no miracle solution to escape this inevitable rise in prices, small daily gestures can slightly reduce everyone’s consumption. A statement that is also true on the side of game consoles.

Thus, as stated The Verge in a recent article, the Xbox Series X and S have a fairly high electricity consumption even when they appear to be off. By using Instant Start mode, these consoles can quite logically start up faster and resume a game instantly. It is practical to say the least, but not without consequences on the electricity bill.

Playing while saving is possible

Using the famous instant start, an Xbox Series X consumes 13 watts (compared to 11 watts for an Xbox One S) in standby. By keeping this power mode active 24 hours a day, The Verge estimates this to be £4.93 on a monthly electricity bill based on UK prices. The Xbox Series S clocks in at 10 watts, which equates to 3.80 pounds per month. Finally, the Xbox One S reaches 4.18 pounds in a similar configuration.

To change the situation, it is imperative to opt for the Energy saving mode. By doing this, the consumption only reaches about 0.5 watts, for 20 pence (cents) monthly. But the consoles of Microsoft must obviously be started completely with each ignition. In short, whether in Great Britain or elsewhere in Europe, completely turning off your console and using the least energy-consuming mode can save money.
