Energy programming removed from future bill

The preliminary draft law on “energy sovereignty”, supposed to set France’s energy course, now removes all objectives and choices in terms of energy and climate, according to a new version of the text consulted on Wednesday by the AFP.

The text, put out for consultation since the beginning of the year, has been stripped of its title I, devoted to energy programming. Only the aspects of price regulation, consumer protection and the hydroelectric dam regime remain.

The advisory bodies were informed on Wednesday. The Minister of the Economy, now in charge of the subject under the leadership of Bruno Le Maire, did not react immediately.

The draft bill made public on January 8 must be presented to the Council of Ministers by early February.

It had already caused a number of energy players to jump due to the absence of quantified objectives for renewable electric energies (solar, wind), until now set out in the law in force.

On the other hand, it set precise objectives for nuclear energy, a priority for President Emmanuel Macron and for Bruno Le Maire, in charge of Energy since the reshuffle last Thursday. The contours of the portfolio still need to be clarified.

It also set new objectives for the reduction of greenhouse gases and energy savings for France, under less binding terms than today (with wording committing to tending towards these objectives).

None of this appears in this corrective referral to the bill relating to energy sovereignty, now bearing the letterhead of the Minister of the Economy: Title I and its articles appear crossed out.
