  • The Federal Council has taken note of a report on the construction of domestic gas storage facilities.
  • He now wants to clarify the legal and financial framework for this.

If Switzerland had storage facilities for natural gas, biogas and hydrogen, this would serve to ensure a secure supply. The federal government therefore wants to work with the industry to examine whether such storage facilities could be built. The Federal Council took note of a report on the construction of domestic gas storage facilities. The paper shows that seasonal storage options for natural gas, biogas or hydrogen could serve to ensure security of supply, the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) announced.

In focus: underground seasonal storage

The Federal Council now wants to clarify the legal and financial framework for the construction of gas storage facilities in Germany. The Economics Department (EAER) and the Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (UVEK) are expected to present results by the end of April 2023. The industry should also be involved. For the Federal Council, the focus is on seasonal storage, especially underground. Experience has shown that the construction of such systems takes between five and ten years from the decision to implementation.

Thanks to electrification and energy-saving measures, the share of natural gas in Swiss energy consumption will fall significantly by 2050, writes the SFOE. But gas will remain important for industry. In the future, this demand will be covered mainly with biogas, hydrogen and natural gas. Storage options are therefore important.

Legend:

Switzerland currently has no large gas storage facilities on its territory.
