Christian Eriksen soon back on a football pitch? Unimaginable a few weeks ago. And yet seven months after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2021, last June, the Danish international would be in discussion with the English club Brentford.
Christian Eriksen has been free since mid-December and the termination of his contract with Inter Milan. The midfielder, now fitted with a pacemaker, had been forced to leave Serie A, which he joined in January 2020, due to medical rules in force in Italy which prohibit a player from playing with a cardiac defibrillator.
But his accident and this forced departure had in no way altered his desire to pursue his career. Eager to return to competition, he could return to England, where he played for six and a half seasons in the jersey of Tottenham. Brentford, current 14th in the Premier League, would have offered him a six-month contract, with an additional year as an option. But the British formation would not be alone on the spot. Newcastle and Leicester would also be interested in his arrival.
If negotiations were to materialize with one of his clubs, he would see his wish granted. At the beginning of the month, in a long interview for the Danish channel DR1, Christian Eriksen (29) had confided his desire to play again. “It’s my dream to come back. I’m sure I can come back, because I don’t feel any different,” he assured with the desire to compete in the World Cup in Qatar with the Denmark team. “My goal is to play the World Cup in Qatar”, had launched the Dane to 109 selections.
And to add: “Physically, I am in good shape again, so I have to get back to football and prove that I can reach this level again. It’s very important, I want to play with the national team at the World Cup. (…) Once again, it will be up to the coach to estimate my level, but my heart is not an obstacle. To see his dream come true, he must first find a club. What could be done in the next few days.
