(Boursier.com) — Entech has just obtained an order from Engie Laborelec for a battery storage system which will be installed at the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) located on the island of Eday, in the Orkney archipelago in the north of Scotland .

This order is part of the Forward2030 project, financed by the European public fund Horizon 2020 and led by a consortium led by Orbital Marine Power, a pioneer in tidal turbines. The 1.2MW/1.5MWh lithium-ion battery storage system supplied by Entech is designed to analyze the benefits of combining storage and tidal energy to meet changing demands of the network in a context of increasing penetration of renewable energies while increasing the potential revenues of the project. This will demonstrate the technological and economic viability of this association with a view to deployment on a larger scale across Europe.

Tidal energy, which exploits the energy of sea currents, is part of marine renewable energies. Excluding offshore wind, these now represent less than 0.1% of the global energy mix: the objectives of the European Green Deal require a 25-fold increase in current MRE production capacity by 2050. To achieve this, the transition to the industrial development stage of tidal technologies is a necessity. The Forward2030 project, deployed in real conditions, is one of the most advanced in the world for this type of energy.
