Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he is formally requesting his “accelerated NATO membership” after the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Russia. An entry that could tip Europe and the world into “a deadly spiral” according to Jordan Bardella, candidate for the presidency of the National Rally, guest of the Grand Rendez-vous on Sunday.

Following the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Moscow, kyiv announced to seize the International Court of Justice (ICJ), “urging the Court to take up the case as soon as possible”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced that he would “sign Ukraine’s candidacy for accelerated NATO membership”, a decision supported by the United States and Canada. But for Jordan Bardella, candidate for the presidency of the National Rally, “the entry of Ukraine into NATO could bring Europe and the world into a deadly and extremely dangerous spiral”.

An “unwelcome” application

“I hear the Ukrainian president’s request to integrate NATO very quickly. But if Ukraine enters NATO, all NATO countries have a duty by definition to assist Ukraine, which is a country under attack, which is a country at war. Which means that we could create the conditions for a belligerence of almost all the NATO countries. So, I think that this candidacy is unwelcome and that it is not desirable”, continued Jordan Bardella, guest of the Grand Rendez-vous on Sunday.

“Russia is today in a weak position because it is in the process of creating around itself the conditions for partial or relative isolation on the international scene. China has shown caution in its vote in the Council Security Council on the recognition of the territories and on these referendums of which no one can accept the result”, he declared.
