Epic Games acquires Bandcamp, the online music store for indie artists

When Epic Games redeemed Psyonix, Harmonix or even Capturing Reality, it was obviously to expand his empire in the video game industry. So when the company behind Fortnite and theUnrealEngine announced the acquisition of band camp today, there was something to be surprised about. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed at this time.

For those who do not know it, the platform band camp allows you to listen to and especially buy tracks from independent labels, as well as physical objects such as vinyls and merchandising, and is mainly used by electronic music players. It prides itself on being one of the fairest services for artists, with an average of 82% of revenue going into creators’ pockets, and has been around since 2008.

band camp will continue to operate independently following this acquisition, but will benefit from the knowledge ofepic to “ expand internationally and drive development forwardfrom basics like album pages, mobile apps, merchandising tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to new initiatives like vinyl pressing and live streaming services.”

“Bandcamp’s mission is to help spread the healing power of music by creating a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans,” said Ethan Diamond, CEO and co-founder of Bandcamp. “In Epic, we’ve found a partner who believes as deeply as we do that the future of music, and art itself, depends on creating fair and inclusive communities like the one our fans and artists have helped build. to construct. We’re excited to work alongside the Epic team to accelerate the realization of our mission and pursue our shared goal of empowering more creators in a fair and open way. »

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the Bandcamp team to Epic Games,” said Steve Allison, vice president and general store manager, Epic Games. “Bandcamp has built an incredible community and business where up-and-coming artists can succeed through the direct support of their fans, with one of the best revenue models and terms in music. This aligns closely with Epic’s approach of supporting creators across all mediums and allowing them to connect directly with their fans. »

If it seems certain that band camp will grow thanks to Epic Games, will we see the reverse happen? Will musical initiatives be even more numerous in Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout ? Case to follow!
