Epic Games announces the acquisition of… Bandcamp

Today we are thrilled to announce that Bandcamp will be part of Epic Games. Bandcamp is an online music store and community where fans can discover, connect and directly support the independent musicians they love. Fair and open platforms are essential to the future of the creator economy. Epic and Bandcamp share a mission to build the most artist-friendly platform that lets creators keep the majority of their hard-earned money. Bandcamp will play an important role in Epic’s vision to build a creator marketplace ecosystem for content, technology, games, art, music and more“, explains the press release.

Bandcamp has built an incredible community and business where up-and-coming artists can succeed through the direct support of their fans, with one of the best revenue models and conditions in music. This aligns closely with Epic’s approach of supporting creators across all media and enabling them to connect directly with their fans.“, adds Steve Allison, vice president and general manager at Epic Games. Like that of the ArtStation platform last year, the acquisition of Bandcamp is a testament to the scope and diversity of Epic Games’ ambitions.

Co-founder and CEO of Bandcamp, Ethan Diamond goes further by considering Epic Games as the ideal partner to carry the vision that Bandcamp has been striving to put forward since 2008. The CEO confirms that the direction of Bandcamp will remain in place and that the functioning of the platform (which allows artists to keep an average of 82% of their sales revenue) will not lose any of its values. However, Epic Games’ support should allow it to expand internationally and develop a certain number of files, whether we’re talking about simple things like album pages, mobile applications, the payment and search and discovery functions, or newer initiatives like vinyl pressing and live streaming services.
