Epic Games opposes Minecraft’s NFT ban

It’s been two days since developer Mojang Studios removed NFTs from their popular sandbox game Minecraft. The digital collectibles contradict video game principles, it said in one Message. The gaming community cheered, the NFT community was shocked.

For the latter, there was now backing from Epic Games. Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney published one tweet, in which he ruled out an NFT ban for his video games. Developers should be free to design games, but not impose their views on others. “We will not do that,” was his closing statement.

In general, Sweeney is considered an advocate of blockchain technology. With it, individual ownership is also possible in games. Just last April, Epic Games raised $2 billion to work with Lego to build a kid-friendly Metaverse.

Meanwhile, NFTs remain controversial in the gaming scene. Publisher Ubisoft received a violent shitstorm for its own initiative last year.
