Epic Games is always keen to help developers of games and other programs by providing them with tools that are as practical as they are ergonomic. The RealityScan is no exception to this rule!

The American firm has just deployed an application that will greatly facilitate the creation of virtual 3D objects.

An app that changes a lot of things

For several years now, Epic Games has been at the bedside of creators thanks to its Unreal Engine. This is relatively easy to understand, but the company behind it Fortnite didn’t stop there. Indeed, it now tackles the creation of 3D models. A not always easy task that can give beginners a hard time…

This is when the RealityScan application arrives to simplify our lives. It can be downloaded on iOS and is used to scan a real object in our environment to make a 3D model that can be used in a video game or in any other project. For this, it is simply necessary to photograph the object in question from all possible angles. A heat map even indicates the best capture angles, and each image is then displayed in augmented reality.

Extremely easy to use

Once scanned, RealityScan is able to export the model(s) to Sketchfab, an online 3D file hosting and viewing site. From this platform, it is possible to transfer a creation to many media such as the Unreal Engine. Finally, all that remains is to place the object in the game under development.

Based on initial feedback, RealityScan is relatively easy to use. However, it is strongly recommended to have an iPhone or iPad with a good camera. An Android version is planned for next year.
