After having made you discover the key professions of the summer season, Europe 1 immerses you this week in an auditory series. Close your eyes and open your ears to discover the sounds of cities around the world. For this second episode, go to Milan and its countless fountains, metropolis of the Lombardy region, in northern Italy.

A real oasis in the middle of the urban chaos

In the middle of the urban jungle, the sound of flowing water, falling into a small basin on the ground, can be heard in the distance. A soothing sound. In Milan, water holds an important place in the landscape. About 600 fountains are present in the city. An efficient, waste-free way to keep your water distribution network always in motion.

While walking in a small street as in a large avenue, or at the crossing of a park, these fountains represent a real oasis in the middle of the urban chaos for many inhabitants. “I was thirsty and I looked for a small fountain. It was by hearing it that I managed to identify it”, says this local resident.

Fountains are also the “sound of coolness”. “It makes me happy”, “the sound of water refreshed just by approaching the fountain”, assure these Milanese, happy to find all these fountains in periods of high heat.
