Close your eyes and open your ears to discover the sounds of cities around the world. For this sixth episode, we take you to Barcelona. Dive into the city’s metro, in Catalan.

A pride for the locals

These are the voices of Barcelona. A man, a woman, a duo that says it all about a city that loves its language so much, Catalan. So, it’s true that at the beginning, it’s difficult to understand everything, it’s surprising and it’s even quite confusing, especially for tourists who admit to getting a little lost. “Just to take the tickets, it’s a bit complicated,” admits a French tourist.

But for the locals, it’s a real pride. “I’m Catalan and I really like it to be in Catalan. It would be good for tourists to learn it and it would even be a shame to lose it,” said a resident of Barcelona. “I have always heard the same voice since my childhood”, adds another. After all, he and she are part of the scenery. By dint of hearing them, then comes the satisfaction of having some notions of Catalan and of feeling in a region in its own right.
