L’Houellebecq case continues to be talked about. On the set of BFMTV, Éric Dupond-Moretti violently criticized, Sunday, January 8, the words of the writer with regard to Muslims. “To say that Muslims are not French like the others is unbearable. To say that they are thieves… All that generates hatred, it is contrary to all the values which are mine, ”said the Keeper of the Seals in reference to the recent remarks of Michel Houellebecq in the review Popular Front by Michel Onfray.

In an interview, the world-famous writer presented Muslims as a threat to the security of non-Muslim French people. “The wish of the native French population, as they say, is not for Muslims to assimilate, but for them to stop stealing from and attacking them. Or else, another solution, that they go away, ”affirmed Michel Houellebecq. He also predicted future “Bataclan upside down” with regard to Muslims, in reference to the jihadist attacks of November 13, 2015.

This point of view of Michel Houellebecq therefore did not fail to make Éric Dupond-Moretti jump: “We have trivialized this type of remark. 15 years ago, we would all have gone to the front line to denounce them. We got used to that. This is what Hannah Arendt called the banality of evil, ”he castigated.

The Great Mosque of Paris withdraws its legal proceedings

After the publication of the interview at the end of November, the Great Mosque of Paris had denounced remarks “of staggering brutality” and had assured that it had filed a complaint against the writer “before the public prosecutor”. However, after an interview between the rector Chems-eddine Hafiz and the novelist, the religious institution confirmed on Friday that it had decided to “waive legal proceedings” against the writer Michel Houellebecq for the “violent” remarks aimed at the Muslims, welcoming in particular the “regrets” expressed by the novelist.

The day before, the writer had admitted that certain paragraphs were “ambiguous” and sent the Figaro a new amended version of his initial remarks. What the French “are asking for, and even what they are demanding, is that foreign criminals be expelled, and in general that justice be more severe with petty offenders”, wrote Michel Houellebecq.
