The SIM card has become smaller and smaller, in the meantime it can even disappear completely. Because modern smartphones sometimes have the function of using a built-in SIM card, the so-called eSIM card.

It works like a normal SIM card. It only has to be activated first and linked to the appropriate tariff. This can be done using a QR code or a registration code from the provider.

Apple has been supporting the “eSIM” concept for years. The first models with a corresponding function were the iPhone XR, XS and the iPhone XS Max in 2018.

Samsung, on the other hand, only jumped on the eSIM train two years ago. The feature is also only reserved for the higher-priced Galaxy S and Z model series.

Google

Even before Apple, Google launched the Pixel 2, an eSIM-enabled cell phone, in 2017. Since then, the eSIM has been part of the functionality of the Pixel series.
