Estelle Duran case: the gray areas of a terrible family drama

A legacy case that turns to drama. At the beginning of September 2016, part of Estelle Duran’s body has been found dismembered and calcined in the family home of The valley, a village of 600 inhabitants located not far from Rochefort. A macabre discovery that occurred a few days after the opening of a worrying disappearance procedure by the Saintes prosecutor’s office. Quickly, suspicion fell on the victim’s brother, Loic Duranwho maintained “a major conflict with Estelle”.

Indeed, on September 5, 2016, a few hours before the tragedy, Estelle Durant had confided to her companion that she feared being killed by her brother with whom she had an appointment the same evening, in the house. For many months the brother and sister had been in deep disagreement about this family home, inherited from their parents, who died in 2013 and 2015. Indeed, he wanted to rent and keep the house and jealously guarded the heritage of their parents. For her part, her sister wanted to sell the house. “I couldn’t stand my sister’s use of the house with her friends. She got drunk, she took drugs. I disapproved, as my parents would have disapproved”explained Loïc Duran during his trial in October 2020 by the Assize Court of Charente-Maritime

Loïc Duran denies having wanted to kill his sister

Questioned by the investigators, Loïc Duran had ended up admit to hitting his sister with a hammer blow behind the head but has always denied his intention to kill the 45-year-old mother. After having committed the irreparable, Loïc Duran had all the same dragged the body of his sister into the garden before setting it on fire. He then tried to hide the charred remains in a grove in a neighboring town. The remains of Estelle Duran’s body were finally discovered later near a road, then in the garden of La Vallée as well as on a beach in La Tremblade, near Royan. Corn others have never been found : a gray area among many others for which the murderer had offered no explanation. The latter was finally sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.
