Ethereum censorship: Flashbots unveils SUAVE for more decentralization

More decentralization on Ethereum – Since switching to Proof of Stake, the network Ethereum faces a censorship problem. This censorship is caused by a centralization around actors based in the United States. To overcome this problem, Flashbots has just unveiled its SUAVE projectwhich aims to decentralize block building.

Censorship rages on Ethereum

Since August, theOffice of Foreign Assets Control issued censorship recommendations vis-à-vis the Tornado Cash protocol.

These recommendations unfortunately had a significant impact on Ethereum. Indeed, the majority of companies participating in the block validation process on Ethereum are based in the United States. As a result, the latter have no choice but to apply the OFAC measures.

Therefore, more than 70% of blocks produced on Ethereum carry out systematic censorship of transactions linked to Tornado Cash.

Although this situation does not engender strict censorship, this remains extremely problematic. Especially with respect to Ethereum’s inclusiveness and censorship resistance values.

Fortunately, many players in the ecosystem are actively working to resolve this problem. Thus, the company Flashbots, recently open the source code of several of its software.

Flashbots unveils SUAVE

Nevertheless, the Flashbots teams want to go further in solving this problem.

Thus, on November 23, Hasu,Flashbots’ chief strategist unveiled the company’s plans for SUAVE: the Single Unifying Auction for Value Expression.

This project directly echoes the centralization of block builders on Ethereum:

“We need to ensure that block building as a process results in a meaningful decentralization of power. Because crypto must end up being decentralized, and because humanity needs decentralization in its financial systems, now more than ever. »

In practice, the SUAVE project aims to dissociate the role of mempool and that of a block builder via a specialized and decentralized alternative.

What is SUAVE?

In the presentation publication, SUAVE is announced as “independent network that can serve as a decentralized mempool and block builder for any blockchain”.

Thus, this tool will not be limited to Ethereum. Indeed, it can be used by any blockchain called EVM-compatible (Ethereum Virtual Machine).

SUAVE: a blockchain-agnostic solution.

Therefore, SUAVE will enable an independent block-building network that is not blockchain-specific. This has several advantages:

  • Allows to maximize the MEV across multiple channels;
  • Optimize block production as much as possibleboth for the producer and for the users;
  • Maximize geographic decentralization and reduce regulatory pressures from certain jurisdictions.

However, the SUAVE project is still in its infancy. Indeed, it has a roadmap in three main stages (Centauri, Andromeda and Helios) which make it possible to make SUAVE more complex as it develops.

Fortunately, the Ethereum network is able to resist censorship until SUAVE is deployed. In effect, even with 99% of Block Builders adhering to OFAC recommendations, transactions related to Tornado Cash are only delayed.

Cryptos and blockchain technology are still young and volatile sectors. Any investment involves risk. As a well-informed investor, have you done your own research and decided to take the plunge?
