Ethereum has a new candidate to become a layer 2: Celo

Celo wants to play in a new court. Celo is a layer 1 blockchain aimed at creating a privileged environment for mobile phones. Launched in 2020, Celo has seen significant growth, including reaching nearly $100 million in TVL. Now the project plans to become a layer 2 of Ethereum.

Soon a new second layer solution on Ethereum?

As we just discussed, Celo is a separate blockchain. This ensures consensus via a Proof of Stake mechanism. However, after almost three years of existence, its teams have made a surprising announcement to say the least.

Indeed, in parallel with the ETHCC conference in Paris, the Celo teams announced their will to transform their L1 blockchain into a second layer solution of Ethereum.

“After months of research and initial discussions with Celo and members of the Ethereum community, @cLab yesterday proposed a major upgrade for Celo to migrate from an EVM-enabled L1 to an L2 on Ethereum, taking into initially pressing OP Stack. »

As announced, this new second layer solution will be based on the technology developed by Optimism, namely theOP Stack. In reality, Celo wishes join the ecosystem of super chain using Optimism technology.

Nevertheless, some changes have been made to the technological layer. Thus, this L2 will have a decentralized sequencerwhich will be operated by current Celo validators.

The availability of off-chain data will be ensured by the protocol EigenLayeras well as’EigenDAoperated by Ethereum node operators.

Finally, a change has been made to maintain Celo’s own transaction completion mechanisms.

A migration to be validated by the Celo community

As explained in the announcement, the Celo teams consider that the situation is ideal to make this migration to the Ethereum ecosystem:

“Recent L2 research developments have laid out a viable path for Celo to more closely align with Ethereum and leverage its security without sacrificing the advantages that the network is unique in today’s eyes. community and its users. »

Moreover, they explain that this migration will not have no impact on users. Indeed, dApps and mobile-oriented features will be unchanged.

It is now up to the community to determine if this migration will take place. In this context, the latter are invited to participate in the discussions relating to this migration. Subsequently, a temperature vote will be offered July 22 to the community, which will give way to a governance vote if the enthusiasm of the community follows.

For its part, the Optimism network recently carried out a rebranding. Effectively, Optimism mainnet is now called OP Mainnetto better separate the OP Stack from the Optimism Network.
