Ethereum: Metamask wants to know everything about your IP address – How to escape it?

The fox is after your IP – Launched in 2016, MetaMask quickly became the reference wallet for Ethereum and EVM blockchains in general. With over 21 million monthly users, MetaMask is Consensys’ flagship product. However, this one has just carried out a modification of its privacy policy which is controversial.

Consensys is a company valued at $7 billion which offers various software solutions dedicated to the blockchain.

Among them, the wallet MetaMask is by far the most popular Consensys application. Consensys is also at the origin from Infurathe Angular framework provider of Ethereum.

However, Consensys is at the heart of a bad buzz after the company published a modification of its privacy policy. Thus, on November 23, WuBlockchain revealed that Consensys will now perform a collects IP addresses and wallets of its MetaMask users.

In practice, Consensys will collect IP addresses from MetaMask wallets using Infura’s RPCnamely the default one.

“When you use Infura as the default RPC provider in MetaMask, Infura collects your IP address and Ethereum wallet address when you send a transaction. »

As a reminder, the PRC is the service allowing us to connect to a blockchain node, in order to transmit our transactions to it and obtain on-chain information.

Obviously, this announcement had the effect of a bomb and many Internet users called for a boycott of the fox wallet.

However, it is still possible to continue to use MetaMask without undergoing this data collection.

In practice, all you have to do is enter the address of another RPC than that of Infura in your MetaMask wallet. Unfortunately, it is not possible to modify the default Ethereum network of MetaMask, so we will have to create a new entry.

To do this, go to the list of networks on your Metamask wallet and click on “Add network”.

Add a new network to MetaMask.
Add a new network to MetaMask.

We will then configure this new network with the following information :

  • Network name : Ethereum (Custom RPC)
  • New RPC URL : https://rpc.ankr.com/eth
  • Channel ID : 1
  • Currency : ETH
  • Block Explorer URL : https://etherscan.io

You will then only need to use this network with RPC Ethereum (Custom RPC) to interact with Ethereum without Consensys being able to collect data.

For this example, we have set the RPC of Ankr, however, you are free to use another RPC. You will find a list of many public RPCs on the Ethereumnodes site.

It seems that more and more US-based crypto companies want to collect data about their users. In effect, Uniswap Labs recently announced similar data collection on the front-end of its Uniswap DEX.
