NAIROBI (Reuters) – Peace talks under the aegis of the African Union due to be held this weekend in a bid to end the nearly two-year-long conflict in Tigray in northern Ethiopia have been postponed for logistical reasons, the Tigray rebels and two diplomatic sources said on Friday.

The Ethiopian government and the Tigray rebels on Wednesday accepted the African Union’s invitation to start formal talks in South Africa, the first since the conflict broke out in November 2020.

The violence has caused the death of thousands of people and millions more have been displaced.

On Friday, at least five people were killed and 37 others were injured in an airstrike about 30 km from Tigray’s capital, Makale, the director of a local hospital said.

Ethiopian authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the strike.

The diplomatic sources, who requested anonymity, said the postponement of the talks this weekend was linked to logistical issues and that no new date had yet been set.
