NAIROBI (Reuters) – The African Union (AU) said on Friday that peace talks aimed at ending the nearly two-year-old conflict in Ethiopia would begin on October 24 in South Africa.

The Ethiopian government and Tigray rebels earlier this month accepted the AU’s invitation to start formal talks.

A first meeting had been scheduled for the beginning of the month, but could not be held for logistical reasons. An adviser to the Ethiopian Prime Minister has confirmed the government’s participation in the October 24 talks.

The spokesman for the Tigrayan forces did not immediately respond to requests from Reuters.

The violence that erupted in 2020 left thousands dead and millions displaced in Tigray, northern Ethiopia.
