ROME (Reuters) – Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest and most active volcano, erupted in spectacular fashion on Thursday evening, lighting up the Italian night sky with explosions and bright red molten lava.

The eruption was concentrated in the volcano’s southeast crater, at a height of about 2,900 meters, sending ash and plumes of smoke 8 km into the sky, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics said. volcanology.

No injuries were reported.

The 3,330 meter high volcano can erupt often spectacularly several times a year, spewing lava and ash above Sicily. The last major eruption took place in 1992.
