EU energy ministers sharpen response to Russia


Brussels has proposed a gradual embargo on Russian oil. Discussions are continuing.

The energy issue will once again be at the heart of discussions in Brussels and EU capitals this week. The Commission, which has increased discussions with member states over the weekend, is expected to put the sixth package of sanctions against Russia on the table on Wednesday or Thursday. It should include gradual restrictions on imports of Russian oil in order to achieve an embargo. “It is not crystallized”said an EU diplomat on Sunday.

Germany, which opposed this project, however announced in the morning that it would be able to cut itself off from Russian oil in the summer. Two weeks ago, Berlin repeated that weaning would only be possible at the end of the year. The dependence of the first European economy on Russian oil has been reduced to 12% in recent weeks, against 35% previously.
