EU: No agreement from member states on a surcharge on Chinese EVs

BRUSSELS, October 4 (Reuters) – European Union member states failed to agree in a vote on Friday on the introduction of a surcharge on imported Chinese electric vehicles, sending the decision back to decision to the European Commission, we learn from European sources.

The European executive can now choose to introduce these new customs duties or submit a new proposal likely to garner broader support.

The European Commission proposed last June to impose a surcharge on vehicles manufactured in China and imported into the EU due to practices deemed unfair by China, but several countries including Germany fear opening a trade war with Beijing. .
