A tragic accident. This Friday, February 17, a brother and a sister of 7 and 12 years of Ukrainian origin died drowned in a retention basin in Grand-Bourgtheroulde, in the Eure, indicates the parquet floor of Évreux. The tragedy occurred around 2:30 p.m. when they were playing with their 5 year old little sister “near a water hole or reservoir” on private municipal property.
The assistant prosecutor of Évreux, Sandrine Ballanger, specified not knowing “if they jumped in the water or if they slipped” before adding that it was “the hypothesis of the accident which was privileged”.
The parents had fled Ukraine to take refuge in France
It was the 5-year-old girl who told her parents that her brother and sister had fallen into the pool. “The 5-year-old sister saw them fall into the water and not come back up, so she ran to tell the parents“, said the prosecutor
The father then rushed to get his children out of the water. But despite the intervention of the firefighters, they could not be revived. “Unfortunately, the resuscitation did not work. The family is completely broken down and psychologically taken care of“, said Sandrine Ballanger. An investigation was opened by the Pont-Audemer gendarmerie brigade to determine the circumstances of the drowning. The family had settled in France in October 2022 after fleeing Ukraine.
