Europa League Conference: OM qualify for the round of 16

I’Olympique de Marseille continues its adventure in the Europa League Conference. Often shaken by Qarabag, OM at least proved to be solid, and for once very effective, to win 3-0 on Thursday February 24 in Baku, after their 3-1 first leg success, and qualify as well for the round of 16 of the event.

In a somewhat complicated period in terms of play and results, OM aspired to qualify and to do so, if possible, in style. If Pape Gueye quickly opened the scoring (12and), the Phocaeans then only suffered against determined but very clumsy opponents in the finish, as evidenced by a goal rightly disallowed for a handball (34and). Initially granted by the referee, it was then refused after a gesture of fair play from the Qarabag players, who recognized their bad gesture.

At the end of the match, Mattéo Guendouzi (77and) then Konrad de la Fuente (90and + 2) have definitively validated the Marseille ticket for the rest of the competition. Second in Ligue 1, he will go to Troyes on Sunday to keep his position and make people forget his nasty defeat on Sunday against Clermont (2-0).

By then, he will know his next opponent in the round of 16 of the Europa League Conference. The journey will be less distant for his supporters, who were just over 150 brave people to have made the trip to Baku, but the level of adversity is likely to rise further.
