Europe makes USB-C charger mandatory, Apple sweats

This has been under discussion for a long time but is now done, USB-C has just been subject to new legislation in Europe to make its use mandatory.

The European Parliament comes to approve the new legislation on the universal charger. USB-C is thus the perfect connection for Europe. The legislative proposal presented by the European Commission on September 23, 2021 is therefore adopted.

In concrete terms, what does this change for Europe?

This means that mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold on the territory of the European Union are required to have a USB-C connection. This goes even further since this obligation will be extended to laptops from the spring of 2026. By then manufacturers will have time to adapt.

This choice allows in particular to avoid unnecessary waste such as the accumulation of chargers and it will simply allow a simpler transition for consumers in Europe.

However, this concerns many product categories, including:

  • smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Headphones and headsets
  • Cameras
  • Pregnant
  • Keyboards
  • Mouse
  • Reading lights
  • Handheld video game consoles
  • Navigation systems
  • In-ear headphones
  • Laptop

The EU estimates the savings for consumers in Europe at €250 million per year.

Apple will therefore be obliged to offer USB-C on its products under penalty of no longer being able to market in Europe.

While the proposal initially angered Apple, the company is known to be testing future iPhone models without Lightning ports. A kick in the anthill.
