Europe/PMI-French manufacturing activity contracted in September

PARIS, October 3 – Manufacturing activity in France contracted in September, show the final results of S&P Global surveys published on Monday, as high energy prices and economic uncertainty weighed on orders.

The PMI manufacturing activity index fell to 47.7, the lowest since May 2020, falling below the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction after 50.6 in August.

The “flash” estimate gave it at 47.8.

“Production fell at a pace not previously seen outside of crisis periods, while new orders also fell sharply as high prices deterred customers from placing orders,” said S&P economist Joe Hayes. .

“For the first time in more than two years, companies expressed pessimism about an increase in their activity over the next twelve months,” he added. (Reportage Tassilo Hummel, French version Laetitia Volga, edited by Kate Entringer)
