Europe strengthens ties with Chile to get its hands on its precious lithium

DECRYPTION – The Commission signed a new trade agreement with Santiago on Friday. The challenge is to secure the strategic supplies necessary for the energy transition.

The Europeans will soon get their hands on a real war chest: more lithium, copper and, in the longer term, hydrogen to advance the green transition, which is particularly intensive in raw materials. It is in any case one of the most salient points of the agreement which was signed on Friday between the bloc and Chile, at the end of a negotiation launched in 2017 to strengthen and modernize the provisions of the previous agreement dating from 2002. “This historic agreement is of key geopolitical importance (…).
