The Bernese hurdles sprinter secures the title at the U23 European Championships in Espoo. Meanwhile, the 4×100 m relay celebrates bronze.

Ditaji Kambundji impressively lived up to her role as favorite at the U23 European Championships in Espoo, Finland. The woman from Bern clearly prevailed in the final over 100 m hurdles in 12.68 seconds. She improved her previous personal best by 2 hundredths and also set a new European Championship record at U23 level.

Kambundji thus clearly kept the competition at bay. The Italian Elena Carraro and the Hungarian Anna Toth (both 12.97) lost almost 3 tenths to the 21-year-old.

The medal collection is growing

For Kambundji it is the second gold medal at international title fights. Two years ago she also won the title at the European Championships in Tallinn, back then in the U20 category. Since then, the native of Bern has also hit the elite. A year ago she won bronze at the European Championships in Munich and recently at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

Women’s relay also wins medal

A few hours earlier, the Swiss delegation in Espoo was able to celebrate another medal. Natacha Kouni, Iris Caligiuri, Léonie Pointet and Melissa Gutschmidt secured the bronze medal over 4×100 m in a Swiss U23 record time (43.59 seconds). The Swiss quartet had to admit defeat to the British (43.04) and the French (43.39).

For anchor Gutschmidt it was already the second medal within 24 hours. The woman from Lausanne also won bronze in the 100 m on Friday. In 10.23 she ran the fastest time of the four Swiss women.
